Closing procedures are key as they firmly decide how the next day will start To make sure you don’t miss any details and get more work for the next opening, we are happy to share with you our retail store closing checklist.
It’s 8 pm and the store is now empty, as you do with opening the store, actions need to be done before leaving the shop. First condition is to wait for all clients to leave, then you can start with turning off or put on standby all the electrics devices (computers, screens or lights) and close the cash machine and save the last inventory list of the day.
For your safety and the safety of your business we recommend you do these actions with other employees to secure the place as much as possible.
Customers are kings or queens! that’s why you need to announce the closing time at least 30 minutes before the closing. This timeline will help your employees to organise the closing period. This announcement will give a clear signal to your clients: it’s time to finish shopping and go to the cash desks.
1 – verify that everybody has left the shop by checking all areas including toilets, stockrooms, and storerooms. Once this is confirmed, bring in the department store all the displays you used during the day : banners, advertising elements, signs, and trolleys that had been placed on the walkway or outside in the street or in the mail of the shopping mall.
2- Lock the doors, including the main entrance, exit doors and access to the parking. A manager must stand by the door to let clients and employees out, he will lock the door after every exit. People who are leaving must be seen to make sure they have not taken products or merchandise.
3. Organize the stock
Return all non-defective returned merchandise to stock. Personnel can begin with reorganizing items on the shelves and work on planogram while waiting for the customers to leave. It’s a good way to don’t annoy them.
4. Cleaning store
If you don’t have a company in charge of cleaning the store, it means that staff will be in charge of this hard work. Closing procedures are impacted by these options. On top of clearing the aisles of any merchandise, carts or litter, dusting and mopping the floors is usually done at closing time.
If you use a cleaning crew, preparing a cleaning checklist can help make sure nothing is left undone. However, it is still best to do some light housekeeping to make everyone’s life easier and instill some sense of responsibility.
Empty all trash, but do not place the bags in the dumpster until the next morning. This will deter any theft of product through the trash for later removal.
5. Closing Registers and POS Systems
Depending on the size of your store, the steps of the closing session can change.
The list below is an example of the main points:
Define a timeline dedicated to counting cash and closing bank safes and cash drawers.
Money countdown, need to be down under the witnessed of the store owner or a manager.
Turn off your computer and POS Systems
Blocked all credit card machines.
Leave the cash registers open, without money of course ! it’s a good way to avoid damages in case of robbery.
6. Last but not least
Take the last 10 minutes to be sure everything is ok. Walk the floor and check if everything is shuttle down.
Turn On the alarms and go through the front door, a good idea is to leave all together and close the store. Then you can close the doors and check that everything is securely locked before moving away. Close the doors and double check that they are securely locked before leaving.
